
Highlights include a recently discovered self portrait by the Italian modernist Giacomo Balla, Il disperato; Autoritratto, oil on canvas, circa 1898-1900, as well as a large drawing by Gustav Klimt of an embracing couple that relates to his iconic oil paintings Fulfillment, 1905, and Der Kuss, 1907–08. On offer is a landscape drawing by Paul Cézanne, Vue d’Auvers, circa 1875, formerly in the collection of Dr. Paul Gachet—the French physician who was Cézanne’s friend and also treated Vincent van Gogh during his last weeks in Auvers. Also of note are works by Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Gustave Loiseau, Auguste Rodin and James Ensor.
The selection of Modern works abounds with examples by Pablo Picasso, as well as Käthe Kollwitz, including two bronzes: Die Klage, 1938–41, and Selbstbildnis, 1926–36 (cast later). Also featured: Fernand Léger, Fêtes de la faim, a gouache design for his illustrated work Les Illuminations, 1949; and Joan Miró, René Magritte, Marc Chagall, and Henry Moore.
A section devoted to Modern Latin American artists includes an array of works by Diego Rivera, Wifredo Lam, Rufino Tamayo, and Roberto Matta.
