Our annual American Art sale leads off the Fall auction season at Swann with panache and a smorgasbord of offerings, from the artists of the Hudson River school, including Thomas Cole and William Bradford, to their mid-20th century counterparts and such equally arresting landscape painters as Reynolds Beal, Fairfield Porter, and Nell Blaine among many others.
This signature sale will showcase important works by American Impressionist artists including Edward Potthast, Julian Alden Weir, and John Henry Twachtman, as well as modernist works by Milton Avery, Joseph Cornell, and John Marin. Among the stand-out sculptural works is a clock made of walnut burl veneers by the American furniture artist and craftsman Wendell Castle. There is also an exquisite pencil portrait drawing of the actress Helen Hayes by the American composer and sometimes visual artist, George Gershwin.
