Enjoy this video of Swann Galleries’ Autographs Specialist, Marco Tomaschett describing a Civil War-era autograph album in our Autographs sale on November 1.
The album contains eighteen presidential signatures, fourteen of which—including Abraham Lincoln—are on a single page. John F. Kennedy and both Roosevelts are also on that page; Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama signed the following spread.
Ulysses S. Grant signed on his own page. Additionally, the album was signed by more that 130 Civil War-period political and military figures, including Schuyler Colfax, George Armstrong Custer, Charles Sumner and William Tecumseh Sherman, as well as cultural icons such as P.T. Barnum, who also jotted:
The noblest art is that of making others happy.
The album was discovered in a Boston bookshop in 1954 and maintained by Manuscript Society president Herbert Klingelhofer.
