Masterworks of 20th-Century Photography

Michael Halsband’s iconic 1985 silver print, Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, presents the two painters in boxing attire. Robert Mapplethorpe’s oversize study Lisa Lyon, silver print, 1980, is a key image from the series on which they collaborated. Robert Frank’s Daytona Beach, Florida, silver print, 1958, printed 1980s, forged a new visual style that combines documentary photography with a snapshot aesthetic. Malick Sidibé, A suite of 7chemisesmade at various Bamako, Mali celebrations, clubs, and happenings, 1969-70, shows a range of intimate portraits of an emerging Malinese youth culture. A scarce copy of Lee Friedlander’s The American Monument, is a deluxe edition in two volumes, with ten original photographs published by the Eakins Press Foundation in 1976.

John Divola, Zuma #5, dye transfer print, 1977, printed 1982. $4,000 to $6,000.

Highlights include Sandy Skoglund, Gathering Paradise, cibachrome print, 1981; Diane Arbus’s Petal Pink for Little Parties, 1962, printed by Neil Selkirk in 1985; Lillian Bassman’s Next to Nothing, silver print, 1948, printed 1990s, a reproduced fashion study; an elegant abstraction by Imogen Cunningham; and Ruth Orkin’s early color work, Geraldine Dentin front of market, chromogenic print, 1949, printed 1978.

Latin American Photographers

Featuring Graciela Iturbide’s Magnolia, 1986; Flor Garduño’s Arbol de los cuervas [Tree of the ravens], Mexico, silver print, 2017; and Lucienne Bloch’s Frida Kahlo with Cinzano bottle, 1935, printed 1988, which depicts the iconic artist in an informal moment.
