Old Master Through Modern Prints: May 2021 Auction Highlights

Lot 47: Hendrick Goltzius, Mars and Venus Surprised by Vulcan, engraving, 1585. Estimate $4,000 to $6,000.

Old Master Prints

With engravings, woodcuts, etchings and drypoints by both well-known and lesser-known esteemed master printmakers whose images have stood the test of time. Featuring works by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Van Leyden, Hendrick Goltzius, Agostino Carracci, Giovanni B. Piranesi, Canaletto, Francisco José de Goya and a run of intricate etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn.


Lot 86: Rembrandt van Rijn, Joseph Telling his Dreams, etching and drypoint, 1638. Estimate $30,000 to $50,000.
Lot 9: Albrecht Dürer, The Birth of the Virgin, woodcut, circa 1503. Estimate $15,000 to $20,000.

Nineteenth Century Prints

Beginning with various prints by Joseph M. W. Turner, William Blake and the Barbizon School artists and a series of James A. M. Whistler etchings, and rolling through the rest of the era with Impressionist lithographs by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Camille Pissarro.

Lot 196: Claude Monet & George W. Thornley, Fillette, dans l’allée d’un parc, portant des bouquets, lithograph, 1894. Estimate $4,000 to $6,000.
Lot 181: James A.M. Whistler, The Wine Glass, etching, 1859. Estimate $5,000 to $8,000.

American Prints

American artists represented among this section include Milton Avery, Gustave Baumann, Howard Cook, Frances Gearhart, Thomas Hart Benton, Childe Hassam, Marsden Hartley, Thomas Moran, and others.


Lot 207: Mary Cassatt, Two Ladies in a Loge, Facing Left (no.2), etching, circa 1882. Estimate $10,000 to $15,000.
Lot 235: Childe Hassam, Washington’s Birthday, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street, etching, 1916. Estimate $8,000 to $12,000.

European Prints

A wide variety of prints by European artists include a large number of works by Pablo Picasso, as well as colorful prints by Marc Chagall, Marino Marini, Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, and Georges Braque, surrealist works by Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, and others.


Lot 428: Marc Chagall, Enlèvement de Chloé, color lithograph, 1961. Estimate $20,000 to $30,000.
Lot 291: Pablo Picasso, Fumeur à la Cigarette Rouge, color aquatint, 1964. Estimate $25,000 to $35,000.

What You Need to Know on Auction Day

This auction will be held live and conducted remotely.

There will not be bidding in the room, though we accept order bids, and interested buyers will be able to participate live via the Swann Galleries App. The app is available in the App Store and on Google Play, which can also be accessed on a desktop at live.swanngalleries.com.

Please note: phone bidding registrations will close the day before the sale at 4pm. 

At this time, our exhibition and auction location at 104 East 25th Street is closed to the public. Private viewings are available by appointment only, and must be arranged in advance. To make an appointment please contact the specialist.
